Meet the people who live, work, create and play on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Connected to mainland Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, this 70-mile coastal peninsula has been isolated from therest of the state for most of its four-hundred year history. The coastline looks much the same as it did in the early 1600s when the first Europeans stumbled across it. Here you will find the only wild barrier islands remaining on the entire Atlantic seaboard

VA Birding & Wildlife Trail - Eastern Shore Loop

With wildlife watching on the Eastern Shore you can experience some of the best wildlife habitat on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

Click on Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website below to explore the many birding and wildlife viewing sites on the Eastern Shore Loop of the statewide Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail (VBWT).

The Eastern Shore Loop includes world-class wildlife watching at Chincoteague at our northern end, and world-class venues like the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Kiptopeke State Park, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel at our southern end. In between a plethora of sites are available to view a great variety of wildlife. The coastline is indented with countless estuaries and tidal mudflats that, during migrations, can be seething with shorebirds. Pockets of deciduous woodlands provide critical stopover points for migrating songbirds, and the peninsula catches tremendous numbers of raptors that follow the coast on their fall migration flight.
