Local and national carvers and artists exhibit
and sell their one - of - a - kind crafts.

Decoy carvers, artists, photographers, and other artisans exhibit and sell their one-of-a-kind handcrafted works on Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local carvers including Carroll Lee Marshall, Russell Fish and Jimmy Bowden will join the nearly 30 carvers who will be exhibiting. Nancy West, Rose Taylor, Jean Ketner-Loeffert and Grover Cantwell are among the fine artists participating this year. Craftsmen and photographers' works round out the weekend show on Chincoteague Island.

New this year is the "Pre-Loved Treasures Silent Auction." Exhibitors and chamber members have donated items they once treasured to be bid on and loved once more. Items donated include artwork from Mary Lou Troutman and Ellen Lawler, carvings from Michael & Karla Adcock and David Farlow, an antique oyster can from Mark Bair, Silvertone guitar from Tina McCloud, handcrafted jewelry, old movie projectors, pottery, a telescope, local Chincoteague collectibles from Donna Mason, and even Gazette magazines that once belonged to Donald Leonard, founder of the Refuge Inn. Visit for a complete list and see who else will be exhibiting at the 2013 Easter Decoy & Art Festival.

The annual festival of decoys and fine art sponsored by the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce has been a part of Easter weekend on our Chincoteague Island for 34 years now. Donna Leonard, chairwoman of the festival says "It has become a harbinger of spring in the minds of locals and the 'unofficial' beginning of the tourist season for visitors to our beautiful shores." Evelyn Shotwell, who once owned an antique shop on the island and now works for the Chamber says "the fascination of watching a carver begin with a block of wood and finish with a delicate replica of a shore bird or song bird is always a joy." While the festival is being held during the Easter weekend, the Museum of Chincoteague Island will be exhibiting two special displays on island life in the early 1900s, with one focusing on early gunning clubs that evolved from duck and goose hunting guide services. One of the stellar displays in the tiny museum is a wall filled with taxidermy birds representing virtually every species in the Chincoteague/Assateague area. Assateague Beach was recently named one of the top beaches in the world to view wildlife by
