Safe Boating Course  -  Cape Charles
(4/25/2015)

Safe Boating Course

Cape Charles, VA  23310

On Saturday, April 25 (the day after "Blessing of the Fleet"), the Cape Charles Yacht Club is joining with the CG Auxiliary to offer a Safe Boating Course. Assuming you take the course (and pass the test at the end!), you will satisfy the requirements for getting a Boater Education Card, which is now required for all boaters 40 years of age and younger in Virginia. As of July 1, 2015, all boaters 50 years of age and younger will be required to have this card! (And one year later, all boaters of any age must have it.) While a location has not yet been identified, we expect it to be taught in Cape Charles, and we anticipate the hours to be about 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This course often costs up to $40 for the books / materials, but we anticipate getting those materials for free. We might have to charge a small facility fee, which we might ask for donations to cover, but the course will essentially be free. The card which will result is recognized in all 50 states.

The Cape Charles Yacht Club anticipates having a break in the course between about 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., during which time we have the Coast Guard's permission for you to get some experience setting off expired flares! Most of us have some of those stored on our boats; it's time to look at your flares and get new ones if they have expired or are about to expire. I'm sure that many (or most) of you have never had the opportunity to set off a flare--now you can. And you can just come for that event if you don't want to or need to take the Safe Boating Course.

We also anticipate having lunch (not free) after lighting the flares, and we hope to have a very entertaining speaker (about safe boating) from northern Virginia during that period of time, who will be visiting a member our club then. (Again, if you can't take the Safe Boating Course, you can still come have lunch with us and enjoy the speaker--more details will be announced later.)
