Exhibit - The Art of Rug Hooking  -  Onancock
(3/14/2014 - 5/31/2014)

The Art of Rug Hooking

Ker Place
69 Market Street
Onancock, VA  23417

A new fiber arts exhibit adorning the walls of historic Ker Place in Onancock will greet visitors as the museum reopens for the 2014 season with a special evening event on Friday, March 14.

The Federal period, Georgian-style house serves as headquarters of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society. It was built in 1799-1803 for John Shepherd Ker, a prosperous farmer-merchant, his wife Agnes Corbin Ker and their family.

The exhibit, “The Art of Rug Hooking,” features 22 creations by five artists. It debuted at an opening event on Feb. 14 and will remain on display through May, including for the free “Night at the Museum” on Friday, March 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Along with the exhibit, the museum will unveil two others this spring, highlighting Gov. Henry A. Wise and portraits of Eastern Shore residents and an exhibit of paintings by Richard Toft.

The museum also will be open Sunday, March 16, from noon to 4 p.m. to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend in Onancock.

Fiber artists whose works currently are on display at Ker Place include Onancock residents Lynne Fowler and Stella Rohde, Chincoteague resident Mildred Joyce, Elissa Crouch of Cambridge, Md., and Loris Blandford of Frankford, Del.

Joyce, 88, began hooking rugs in 1995 after doing other fiber arts including sewing, knitting and quilting.

She now focuses exclusively on rug hooking.

“It brings me immense pleasure. It is something everyone should try,” said Joyce.

Fowler says she thrives on the tactile nature of fiber arts.

“I find peace when I hook rugs, or knit or spin. The simple process of holding the fabric and having it slip through my fingers brings joy,” she said.

Fowler said rug hooking to her “is usually very personal; therefore I seldom have pieces for sale.”

Most of the material she uses is hand dyed.

“It is another way of controlling the process. ... It is fascinating to me to see how a simple piece of white wool can be transformed by a few chemicals and water into something breathtaking in complexity,” she said.

Coastal Ecosystems and their Role in Mitigating Storm Damage to Coastlines

Coastal ecosystems, such as salt marshes, seagrass beds, and oyster reefs, provide a number of ecological services including dissipating wave energy, absorbing storm surge, and providing essential habitat for fish and wildlife. Evaluating storm and human impacts on these ecosystems is an important part of understanding estuarine health and resilience. This talk will highlight the role that these and other ecosystems have on mitigating storm impacts along coastlines and how they reduce the vulnerability and potential economic losses of coastal communities to waves, flooding, and sea level rise.

Easter Decoy & Art Festival  -  Chincoteague Island

35th ANNUAL

EASTER DECOY

& ART FESTIVAL

Chincoteague Combined School
4586 Main Street

Chincoteague, VA  23336

ANTICIPATES WONDERFUL WEEKEND OF TREASURES

Local and national carvers and artists of all kinds exhibit and sell their works.  Awards are given in various categories including the Curtis Merritt Award of Excellence given to the artist who demonstrates the highest standards of "creativity, character and overall goodness" as voted on by the other exhibitors.  Best Carver and Best Artist are chosen by People's Choice and the Best Photograph of Chincoteague or Assateague is chosen by the committee.  Wooden Easter Eggs decorated by the exhibitors highlight the show each year with some fetching handsome sums.

Donna Leonard, chairwoman of the show for over 3 decades, says "This year’s show is going to be spectacular! New artists join seasoned veterans at the best decoy and art show on the east coast."

Decorative and working decoys by Robert Gray, Ron Rosciszewski, Jay Cherrix, David Farlow, Ed Kuhn, Corky Dize, Dale Buffington, Bill Hickson, Russell Fish, Michael Adcock, Ray Whetzel, Ron Stevens, Roy Bohn, Rocky Detwiler, and Bill and Shannon Veasey will be a highlight. Model boats include examples by Eddie Somers, Lou Doughty, John Into and Nancy Price. Talented artists exhibiting in all mediums include Kevin McBride, Ellen Lawler, Richard Toft, Mary Lou Troutman, Carl Knuth, Nancy West, Gerald Putt, Nancy Mitchell, Janet Hong, and Rose Taylor. Fine art photographers John Urlock, Don Parks, Elizabeth Bard, and Stephen Moore will be on hand as well. The show is honored to have creators Robert Savage, Shirl’ Eklund, Dot Truitt, Joan and Michael DeVaney, Karen Phillips, Richard and Jolene Coolidge, Joyce Westbury, Joan Krisher, John Rost, Carson and Bonnie Riley, Laura and Pat Ellison, and Starlight Cherrix. John and Cinda Walls will be on hand with carving supplies, tools and wood.

Items for the Pre-Loved Treasures Silent Auction include platters, unusual serving dishes, Giclee painting of the New Chincoteague Bridge (donated by Kevin McBride), mirrors, crystal frog, and a vintage collection of Southern Living cookbooks. Exhibitors and chamber members have donated items they once treasured to be loved a second time around. Unique items are coming in daily. All proceeds from the Pre-Loved Treasures Silent Auction this year are earmarked for the Veteran’s Memorial Park Playground Fund. What a great way to give back to community and the future of Chincoteague Island.

Another show favorite is the silent auction of Wooden Easter Eggs. Each exhibitor is given the opportunity to carve/paint/create a unique piece of art from a wooden egg form. The creativity is amazing! Visit www.chincoteaguedecoyshow.com for a complete list of auction items and exhibitors for the 2014 Easter Decoy & Art Festival. Limited vendor space is still available on a first come first serve basis. Call today to be part of this traditional part of Easter weekend sponsored by the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce.

While visiting one of the "Happiest Seaside Towns in America" named by Coastal Living Magazine in their March 2014 issue, be sure to stop in the Museum of Chincoteague Island to learn more about decoys, gunning clubs, and the over 300 species of waterfowl that call the islands home. TripAdvisor™ also recently ranked Chincoteague #2 in the 2014 Travelers’ Choice Awards Islands.
