Main Stage Series

 CALENDAR GIRLS

By Tim Firth

When Annie's husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Womens' Institute (WI) members to pose nude with them for an "alternative" calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history.

Lecture on the Lawn at Winona  -  Machipongo
(10/19/2014)
Calendar Image

Northampton Historic
Preservation Society

Lecture on the Lawn
at Winona

Bridgetown, Virginia

The next featured home in the NHPS Lecture on the Lawn series will take place Sunday, October 19th at Winona, a small brick structure which is situated on the banks of Hungars Creek. The home of Herman and Mary Walker, Winona has been family property since the 1880's.

Winona's date of construction is unknown and the various theoretical dates suggested  by several Eastern Shore architectural historians will be one topic of conversation with the Walkers. The house’s triple-stack chimneys are Jacobean in style and are unique  in this country – only Bacon’s Castle and Winona survive with this construction. Winona is listed as a Virginia Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Northampton Historic Preservation Society is requesting a $10 per person donation at the event. They encourage everyone to dress casually and ask guest to bring their own lawn chair and beverage of choice.  The event will be held only if weather permits.

presents

Slave and Free on
Virginia’s Eastern Shore
from the Revolution to the Civil War

Author Kirk Mariner Will Discuss His Latest Book

St. James Episcopal Church
Drummondtown Road between Front Street and Back Street
Accomac, VA  23301

The Friends of the Eastern Shore Public Library presents a program with local author and historian Kirk Mariner. Mariner will discuss his latest book, Slave and Free on Virginia’s Eastern Shore from the Revolution to the Civil War.

Using archives and records from Accomac and Northampton Counties, Mariner has crafted an intimate, bottom-up portrait of life on The Shore during the antebellum era.  The book questions many of today’s stereotypes and assumptions about this period of slavery when slaveowners comprised slightly more than half of the white population while a third of the African-Americans were free.

The discussion is Mariner’s first appearance since the publication of his book.

There is no better way to explore the Eastern Shore of Virginia than by bike.  The Between the Waters Bike Tour is sponsored by Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore (CBES) and  winds through interesting historic towns and communities and along back roads to scenic rest stops that overlook the Atlantic seaside and the Chesapeake Bay.  The Bike Tour is scheduled for the 4th Saturday in October with start/finish locations rotating between Wachapreague, Nassawadox, Onancock and Cape Charles.

This one day bike tour is an ecotourism event for CBES, a non-profit organization serving Northampton and Accomack counties, and the Between the Waters Bike Tour is one of the major fundraisers of the year for this group. With very little vehicle traffic, the ride is sure to be relaxed and peaceful as well as easygoing because of the flat terrain.
